Just a Dog

It irritates me to no end when someone tells me ‘it’s just a dog’.  This verse captures my reaction to such an ignorant, self-centered attitude…

Just A Dog
Just A Dog

From time to time, people tell me, “Lighten up, it’s just a dog,” or “That’s a lot of money for just a dog.”  They don’t understand the distance traveled, the time spent or the costs involved for “just a dog.”

Some of my proudest moments have come about with “just a dog.”  Many hours have passed and my only company was “just a dog,” but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by “just a dog,” and, in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of “just a dog” gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you too think it’s “just a dog,” then you will probably not understand phrases like “just a friend,” “just a sunrise,” or “just a promise.”  “Just a dog” brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust, and pure unbridled joy.  “Just a dog” brings out the compassion and patience that makes me a better person.

Because of “just a dog,” I will rise early, take long walks, and look longingly to the future. So for me, and folks like me, it’s not “just a dog” but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future, the fond memories of the past and the pure joy of the moment.

“Just a dog” brings out what’s good in me and diverts my thoughts away from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it’s not “just a dog”, but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being “just a man.”

So the next time you hear the phrase, “just a dog,” just smile, because they “Just don’t understand!.”

  1. I completely agree! We didn’t have dogs much growing up, and I didn’t really have my ‘own’ dog until I was almost 30. Emma, who is my current love, has gotten me through some dark times: divorce, death, life’s absurdities. She has listened to me cry, laugh, question life. She has absorbed tears of sorrow and joy. She has kept me company in her silent way, accepting everything I had to give her. On the dreaded day when she goes to the Rainbow Bridge, I will probably weep more for her than I would for most people I know. It isn’t often that you come across someone so completely selfless, loving, giving, completely happy just to be in your company, and whose only wish is that you be happy and let them be by your side. I will never, as long as I live, understand “just a dog”.

  2. One sees it as cattle,
    another says: It’s a genius.
    Others do not talk rum,
    say: “It’s stupid”.
Others, however, think it is on a leash,
then there are those who can not bear
‘ve had enough: “So one animal does not belong to the city”.

Now you might ask, what is that?
Who brings you luck, who takes you load?
Who makes the grief of you go?
Who can see the blind man again?
    Who makes the lonely alone?
Who takes care of the sick their pain?
Who gives us so much happiness – and expects nothing in return?
Who makes the life around us?
    You know it already,
    it is the DOG.
